I'm so grateful to all of you who have placed orders thus far. This is my thank you letter, which I include in every package. It's a thank you and my attempt to put into words why mushroom leather is so cool. I like how it turned out, so I thought you might want to read it.

Congratulations on your purchase from Mushroom Leather Supply! You are holding an entirely new class of material; brand new to planet Earth.

But why did this fascinating product come to exist? Why is Mushroom Leather Supply in business?

For decades, alternative leather has essentially meant “pleather,” or plastic leather. The “eco-friendly” alternative has been… yes, a petroleum product.

Recently, many startups have tried their hand at alternative leathers made from pineapple, grape skins, corn starch, and other natural materials.

Why is mushroom leather preferable to other bio-based alternative leathers?

Mushroom leather is unique in that it is the only bio-based leather that is grown, much like cow leather. The mushroom mycelium (rootlike structures) weave a mat as they grow, creating a powerfully durable, natural material. Mushroom leather has an organic feeling to it that just cannot be faked.

Mushroom leather can be backed, dyed, or enhanced with plasticizers. That might be appropriate for some of your projects, and we will carry mushroom leathers with a variety of treatments and properties. But those enhancements are not de facto part of the core product, like they are with other bio-based leathers that require extensive processing. The core product is just mushroom mycelium!

Our Mylea™ product, for example, is completely natural and unadulterated. It is even reinforced with an all-natural cellulose textile. This means that it is fully home compostable within three months (it will not degrade if you care for it regularly).

So, whether you have purchased for its low carbon footprint, a concern for our animal friends, a preference for natural materials that deliver on performance, or just out of sheer curiosity, I want to offer a sincere thank you.
